Set up forwarding on a paid planBefore

Forwarding needs Proton Mail Plus, Proton Unlimited or another paid Proton Mail plan. In settings, select Forward and auto-reply, then Add forwarding rule. The recipient must confirm before forwarding starts.

Know forwarding outside Proton ends end-to-end encryptionDuring

If you forward to a non-Proton address, end-to-end encryption is turned off for all email to and from that forwarding address.

Back up your mail with the Export ToolBefore

The Proton Mail Export Tool is available to everyone. It saves all your emails and their metadata as EML and JSON files. Large inboxes can take a few hours.

Know your address can't be reused after deletionAfter

After you delete your Proton account, no one can use your username again, including you. A deleted account can't be recovered.

Import mail and contacts in Gmail settingsDuring

On a computer, open Gmail settings, go to the Accounts and import tab and click Import mail and contacts. Follow the steps on screen, then start the import.

Gmail imports messages but not folders or labels. Your other email account needs POP access.

Expect 30 days of forwarding after importAfter

After you import, Gmail forwards messages sent to your other account for 30 days.

Plan for the end of POP mail fetchingBefore

Gmail is ending POP fetching from other accounts. Existing users can use it until January 2027. Importing mail and contacts on the web still works, but it is a one-time import that does not keep syncing.
