Start with the basics

Where are you?

Some items depend on local rules, like government sign-in or mail forwarding. Pick where you live or where the change applies.

Optional. Model names only.

We never ask for phone numbers, card numbers, passwords or codes. Names of providers or nicknames are enough.

What could break

In a typical android to iphone plan, these are the most serious things to get right.

  • Google Authenticator: sync or transfer your codes

    Critical · Sign-in & recovery

Erase the old phone first and you could be locked out of every account those codes protect, with a separate recovery process for each.

  • Turn off RCS chats before moving your SIM

    Critical · Messaging & contacts

Texts from Android users may not reach the new phone, and you may be removed from RCS group chats.

  • Test texts from Android users, calls and sign-in codes

Critical · Phone & internet service

You could wipe the old phone and then find that sign-in codes don't arrive.

  • Back up the Android phone to your Google Account

    High · Data & files

Photos, files or chat history can be lost for good.

  • Keep the Android phone working until the switch is finished

    High · Devices

If you erase or hand it over too early, anything that didn't transfer may be gone, including codes you need to sign in.

  • Make sure you know your Google Account password

    High · Sign-in & recovery

Setup stalls at the sign-in screen, and a forgotten password can start a recovery process that takes days.

  • Google Photos: let backup finish before you switch

    High · Data & files

If backup was paused or only covered some folders, recent photos and videos can be lost with the phone.

  • Google Password Manager: set it up to fill passwords on the iPhone

    High · Sign-in & recovery

If you're locked out of the password manager, every account inside it becomes harder to reach.

  • Save backup codes for accounts that use sign-in codes

    High · Sign-in & recovery

Without them, a hiccup during the change can turn into a slow account-recovery process.

  • Google sign-in prompts without an Android phone

    High · Core accounts

If the Android phone was your only second step, signing in to Google on a new device can stall once it's erased.

Why this change needs a plan

Apple's Move to iOS app copies a lot during setup: contacts, message history, photos, calendars and even WhatsApp chats. Your Google account keeps working on the iPhone too, so Gmail, Google Photos and Google Calendar don't need to go anywhere.

The gaps are elsewhere. RCS chats can keep routing Android users' messages to your old phone. Authenticator codes, Samsung-only apps and Google Play subscriptions don't move by themselves. Wear OS and Galaxy watches generally won't pair with an iPhone.

The safe approach is to switch with the Android phone still working beside you, and only erase it once the iPhone has proven it can receive your texts and codes.

Why it matters

Your Android phone is tied into your Google account's sign-in, your messaging, your payments and your subscriptions. Each needs a deliberate move, or you risk missing messages, losing codes or paying for things twice.

What makes it risky

Risk is highest when authenticator codes or passwords live only on the Android phone, when RCS chats aren't turned off before the SIM moves, and when the phone is erased before the iPhone is tested.

Common mistakes

  • Moving the SIM before turning off RCS chats, so texts from Android users go missing.
  • Using the Android phone or taking a call during Move to iOS, which can stop the transfer.
  • Forgetting that Google Play subscriptions keep billing after the switch.
  • Erasing the Android phone before moving authenticator codes.
  • Selling the phone without removing your Google account, leaving Factory Reset Protection on.
  • Expecting Samsung Notes, Samsung Pass or Samsung Health data to move by itself.
  • Assuming a Galaxy Watch or Pixel Watch will pair with an iPhone.

Frequently asked questions

What does Move to iOS transfer?

Apple says it can move contacts, message history, photos and videos, calendars, mail accounts, web bookmarks and WhatsApp chats, plus some free apps that exist on both stores. Music, books, PDFs and most apps need moving separately.

Can I keep using Gmail, Google Photos and Google Calendar on an iPhone?

Yes. Add your Google account in the iPhone's settings, or install Google's apps. Your data stays in your Google account.

Will my WhatsApp chats move to the iPhone?

Move to iOS can bring them across during iPhone setup. Check they arrived before you erase the Android phone, which still holds them.

Do I need to turn off RCS before switching?

Google advises turning RCS chats off when you move to a phone or app that won't use them, so Android users' messages stop being sent to the old phone. If you've already moved the SIM, use Google's online RCS deactivation page.

What happens to my Google Play purchases and subscriptions?

Paid apps don't carry over to the App Store. Subscriptions billed through Google Play keep renewing until you cancel them in Google Play; uninstalling the app doesn't cancel them.

Can I use my Galaxy Watch or Pixel Watch with an iPhone?

Generally no. Most Wear OS watches, including recent Galaxy Watch and Pixel Watch models, need an Android phone. Sync and save the watch's data before you switch.

Will my Google passwords work on the iPhone?

Yes, if you set it up. Install Chrome, sign in, and turn Chrome on as a password AutoFill provider in the iPhone's settings, or move your passwords to Apple Passwords or another password manager.
